The Create Your Own Healthy Footprint Conference

Friday 8 May 2015

A big thank you to all who helped us make this such a fantastic day!

The Conference had something for everyone, live music by Liz Stringer and Small Town Romance, whole of audience interactive drumming and a wonderful performance by the Brunswick Women’s Choir.

Our expert presenters; Dr Caroline West enlightened the audience on successfully managing stress, Jackie Furey walked us through building resilience, Mark Bunn provided us with practical strategies for keeping well and Dr Russ Harris introduced us to Acceptance Commitment Therapy and mindfulness.

Carolyn McDonald took the audience through a practical yoga session and Shaun Brewster a massage program.

Crowd favourites, Danielle Jaeger a NMHP participant, presented her story on recovery whilst Camille Shaw took us through her experience as a NMHP Champion.

Finally, it was announced that exciting developments have been made which now see the NMHP as a charity. This enables the organisation to seek and obtain donations from our vast array of industry stakeholders, helping us to remain available to our nursing and midwifery colleagues throughout Victoria.

Dr Russ Harris

Medical Practitioner, Psychotherapist, Executive Coach

Russ Harris, author of the international best-selling self-help book 'The Happiness Trap', is a world-renowned trainer of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). Russ's background is in medicine. As a GP he became increasingly interested in the psychological aspects of health and wellbeing, and increasingly disenchanted with writing prescriptions. Ultimately this interest led to a total career change. He now works in two different, yet complementary roles - as a therapist and as a coach - with over 12,000 hours of one-on-one sessions under his belt.

Since 2005, Russ has provided ACT training for over 15,000 Australian therapists, coaches, counsellors, doctors, and other health professionals. He has authored two ACT textbooks (including ACT Made Simple), and four ACT-based self-help books (including The Reality Slap). He has also been co-author of a further two self-help books. The Happiness Trap, is now the most widely-translated ACT book in the world.

Russ bases his training on three core values: simplicity, clarity, and having fun. His ACT workshops are brief, powerful, cost-effective and life-enhancing. Participants regularly report not only major improvements in their therapy and/or coaching, but also in their personal lives and feedback praises his ability to make complex ideas seem very simple.

Liz Stringer

Singer/Songwriter

Since the release of her first album ;Soon’ in 2006, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Liz Stringer has carved out a reputation as one of Australia’s most respected and critically acclaimed songwriters and performers. She has recorded and released four studio albums, with her latest, 2012’s ‘Warm In The Darkness’, being shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and named ‘Album of The Year’ by Brian Wise of RRRfm Melbourne and Rhythms Magazine.

In October 2014, Liz released a live solo album and DVD, ‘Live at The Yarra’. Recorded and filmed at the iconic Yarra Hotel in Abbotsford, the release received significant critical acclaim (including making Triple J Roots and All’s ’10 best albums of 2014’ list), and led to sold out shows on a 15-date solo tour around Australia, immediately followed by a support slot on The Waifs’ national tour.

Highly respected by her peers as a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Liz has collaborated with many artists including Mick Thomas, Damian Cowell, Van Walker, Suzannah Espie and Mia Dyson. She is one third of the power trio Dyson Stringer Cloher, collaborating with friends and contemporaries Mia Dyson and Jen Cloher, who undertook a 35 date Australian tour at the end of 2013, earning the title of ‘Best Live Gig of 2013’ from the Rhythm Magazine readers poll, and followed up with appearances at Blues Fest and Queenscliff Festival in 2014. Liz is also a member of the critically acclaimed Livingstone Daisies, along with Van and Cal Walker and Michael Barclay.

A passionate advocate of independent music and extensive regional touring, Liz has become a favorite among punters across Australia for her generous and engaging stage demeanour and her skill as a songwriter. As Mick Thomas puts it, “Her performance is as intense as it is personable, as profane as it is sacred”.

Not content with conquering the local scene, Liz has recently toured in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, and was officially showcased at the Folk Alliance International Conference in Kansas City, USA in February 2014.
